Slidewalk Day

I've heard a lot of different words for 'moving walkways' over the years. "Movator", "horizontal escalator", "rolling carpet", "moving sidewalk".

Moving Sidewalks Wikipedia classes them all as "moving walkway", which is a pretty sensible name, but's definitely not as fun as the name H. G. Welles adopted for a related idea, "slidewalk".

I think that's the name we should all use from now on. It's clearly more fun than 'moving walkway' and 'movator'.

I dub today, July 22nd, Slidewalk day. Go forth and find yourself a slidewalk, and either discover the joy of walking while standing still, or the joy of walking at a surprisingly quick pace, or even both!

Incidentally, if you're a parent, you might want to not read deeply enough into the history of moving walkways to run into the story of Tina Marie Brandon, age 3, the first child to die as the result of a moving sidewalk. It's pretty terrible, and if you want to read about it, you'll have to search for it yourself.
