Species Divisions: Abitrary?

It's always seemed to me that the definition of a species appeared somewhat arbitrary, so it was interesting to read What's a Species, Anyway? on New Republic, which talks about the Red Wolf's origins and questions the notion of a species as anything other than a convenient label.
